GAWPT has raised a donation to re-site and re-drill the water windmill pump in Asako village that was installed a couple of years ago. This will ensure a better supply of clean water for the villagers [link]

Mnazi and Buiku Secondary Schools Mnazi Secondary School and Buiku Secondary School have both received donations from GAWPT to build a classroom each.  Both schools are getting on with the building works [link]

Rhinos and dogs The new rhino calf born to Marina in July is a male.  Pete Morkel has been in Mkomazi to look at a wound on the back leg of one of the breeding females.  The wild dog pups are in good shape and we will start their vaccination schedule for rabies and canine distemper in October 2010 [link]

George Adamson's death remembered Kenya Wildlife services (KWS) organised a big event on 20th August to commemorate the 21st anniversary of George Adamson's death.  The event took place in Kora National Park with the main ceremony of the day being held at the graves of George and Terence Adamson. [more]

Suzuki Rhino Club

Suzuki Rhino Club, The Netherlands, have been incredibly supportive of the upcoming rhino translocation and, through their dedication and goodwill, have helped organise the whole translocation.  This is a massive undertaking and endeavour.  Once you know the logistics behind such a translocation, you can appreciate just how much hard work and support is necessary to achieve it. ...link

Another set of wild dog pups was born last night.  We won't see them for at least a month whilst their mother suckles them in the den. ...link


Tstese flies

We are working with a veterinary officer from TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks) to set out tsetse targets around the area of the rhino holding compounds and paddocks.  This will help the incoming rhino from Europe adapt slowly to tsetse flies. ...link


Lioness

We spotted a lioness the other night, something that we haven't seen for a long time.  We have seen a disastrous reduction in the lion population over the past 10 years here in Mkomazi.  Poaching was a factor, to supply the trade in lions' teeth, claws and skin.  Poisoning is another major factor in their decline, significantly as a result of their encroachment on domestic stock herds. ...link
