GAWPT has raised a donation to re-site and re-drill the water windmill pump in Asako village that was installed a couple of years ago. This will ensure a better supply of clean water for the villagers [link]

Mnazi and Buiku Secondary Schools Mnazi Secondary School and Buiku Secondary School have both received donations from GAWPT to build a classroom each.  Both schools are getting on with the building works [link]

Rhinos and dogs The new rhino calf born to Marina in July is a male.  Pete Morkel has been in Mkomazi to look at a wound on the back leg of one of the breeding females.  The wild dog pups are in good shape and we will start their vaccination schedule for rabies and canine distemper in October 2010 [link]

George Adamson's death remembered Kenya Wildlife services (KWS) organised a big event on 20th August to commemorate the 21st anniversary of George Adamson's death.  The event took place in Kora National Park with the main ceremony of the day being held at the graves of George and Terence Adamson. [more]

Six elephants come into the workshop every night.  We are giving them water and will do so until the beginning of the long rains ...link


Wild dog pups

Wild dog pups have come up to the top of the den.  We have spotted six so far. Another alpha female in another compound is heavily pregnant. Once these pups have reached adulthood and helped their mother raise the next litter, they are ready for reintroduction back into the wild. ...link

TANAPA

Meeting yesterday with the TANAPA ecologist for Mkomazi National Park.  We gave her maps of the park with the road networks that were produced by Nick McWilliam with support from the Royal Geographical Society and GAWPT.  We also gave her the Land Use Potential of Mkomazi, produced by G D Anderson in 1967 for the Ministry of Agriculture Research Unit ...link

All the rhino were seen yesterday, including the new female calf, who was playing around at her mother's legs.  All rhino are in good shape. ...link


Lone bull elephant

Yet again, the lone bull elephant has been crashing round the camp at night.  Last night he flattened one entire section of a wild dog breeding compound.  He then moved off to three other breeding compounds and flattened a few of the fence-posts on each of them.  Wild dog keepers have their work cut out for them today, repairing the fences. ...link


Break in

Elephant have broken the water pipe-line that feeds the base-camp from the Kisima Dam.  The JCB was deployed to cover the pipe-line with rocks to prevent this happening again.  At base-camp, an elephant broke into one of the wild dog compounds to get at some vegetation.
