Lioness
We spotted a lioness the other night, something that we haven't seen for a long time. We have seen a disastrous reduction in the lion population over the past 10 years here in Mkomazi. Poaching was a factor, to supply the trade in lions' teeth, claws and skin. Poisoning is another major factor in their decline, significantly as a result of their encroachment on domestic stock herds. …link

Wild dog pups
Wild dog pups have come up to the top of the den. We have spotted six so far. Another alpha female in another compound is heavily pregnant. Once these pups have reached adulthood and helped their mother raise the next litter, they are ready for reintroduction back into the wild. …link

TANAPA
Meeting yesterday with the TANAPA ecologist for Mkomazi National Park. We gave her maps of the park with the road networks that were produced by Nick McWilliam with support from the Royal Geographical Society and GAWPT. All the rhino were seen yesterday, including the new female calf, who was playing around at her mother's legs. All rhino are in good shape. …link
Lone bull elephant
Yet again, the lone bull elephant has been crashing round the camp at night. Last night he flattened one entire section of a wild dog breeding compound. He then moved off to three other breeding compounds and flattened a few of the fence-posts on each of them. Wild dog keepers have their work cut out for them today, repairing the fences. …link
