Outreach

Elisaria Nnko, together with the TANAPA officials, has undertaken donations of cement and roofing sheets to two more secondary schools - Kibacha Secondary School and Mgagao Secondary School.  GAWPT has funded the construction of one classroom in each of these secondary schools. Work in the field goes on apace.  GAWPT personnel are working with TANAPA personnel on de-snaring foot patrols. …link

Wild dogs

The wild dogs are in good shape.  We are starting on the vaccinations for the 20 pups (3 vaccinations for both rabies and canine distemper) undertaken within a 3 month period.  We are also carrying out the annual re-vaccinations (booster) on the adults. …read more

Rhino

Lee, one of our resident female rhinos that arrived in 2001, has had her first calf!  A female. We are absolutely delighted.  All our resident adult females have now bred (with the exception of the new female from the Czech Republic who is just four years old). The Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary now holds 13 rhino (8 female and 5 male). …read more

Wildlife

Elephants have finally moved further away from the base camp to seek water from the larger lakes on the Kenya border. Eland have now settled near the base camp, the first time we have seen them so close for about 10 years. Every night we see warthogs and porcupines visiting the kitchen!

Environmental Education Programme

Environmental Education Programme (Rafiki wa Faru) is going well.  Two trips a week are underway for the 15 year old secondary school pupils from the villages around the national park.  Most of the pupils are lucky enough to see a rhino as these are the dry months and the rhino are more visible. …link

Wild dogs

Wild dog pups are all doing very well.  Total number of pups so far is 21.  These will be the groups that will be reintroduced into the wild next year, when they have helped their mother raise the next litter. …link

Czech rhinos

The older two rhino from Czechoslovakia (female and male) have now been released into a large paddock and an even larger paddock will soon be opened up for them.  The young male will then have the middle sized paddock to himself.  This all takes time and patience. All the other resident wild rhino are in good condition. Work goes on apace putting in the new extension to the Rhino Sanctuary.  This is a massive civil engineering undertaking and the Tanzanian personnel are doing a very good job. …link
